The Stages of Rail Trail Development.
The establishment and construction of the Castlemaine Maryborough Rail Trail (CMRT) is an over $23 million project which has been instigated and driven by the CMRT Committee and its valuable members and supporters. We have developed a three stage plan to build the Trail.
Stage one (cost $150,000) was completed in August 2023 with the publication of a very positive Feasibility Study financed by State, Local Government and local Committee raised funding.
We are currently in Stage two which involves detailed Trail planing and consultation with the Local Councils, Government Authorities and the Communities involved. We have applied for a grant from the Victorian Government’s Enabling Tourism Fund and expect to hear if we have been successful in early July 2024. If successful, the State Government grant will be supported by contributions of $40,000 each from the Central Goldfields and Mount Alexander Shire councils and CMRT’s locally raised funds of $20,000. Should we gain the $500.000 total that is required for this Stage, we plan to complete it by December 2025.
Stage three which will commence in 2026 after the completion of Stage Two, will be the construction of the Rail Trail. This is where the major funding will be accessed through applying to Government agencies and business. The trail building will take several years to complete depending on the way it is planned to carry out the construction. This planning will be decided as part of our Stage Two processes.
